Competitive sports events have stimulated the interest of Sports Psychology professionals in the athlete assessment process within basketball. Understanding the variables that influence competitive State-Anxiety can be relevant for planning specific treatment and intervention programs, enabling athlete development beyond technical and physical preparation. The aim of this study was to assess the level of state anxiety in young school basketball players, to compare anxiety levels with competition experience duration, and to compare state anxiety levels between genders. Eighty-five school-level basketball players (age=15.3±1.5 years) of both female and male genders participated. Prior to the first game of the school-level competition, the State Anxiety Scale - IDATE was administered to the athletes. Kruskal Wallis test and Mann-Whitney test were adopted as statistical procedures, with significance at p≤0.05. The average State Anxiety score identified before the first game of the competition was 44.9 ± 7.85 points. No significant differences were observed between athletes' experience levels in the competition (H(5)=3.948, p=0.577) nor between genders (45.97±7.73 vs. 43.86±7.91, W=730.00, p=0.128). It is concluded that state anxiety is relatively similar among groups of young athletes in a school competition, regardless of their experience level or gender.
