Abstract

Youth civic participation policies have often been developed without considering the diversity of political and social interests of young people, nor have they payed attention to their particular associative context where their target groups are involved. Based on qualitative research among young people in Barcelona, the article traces the trajectories, concerns and anxieties of those who are active in social movements and associations. The case study of Sant Martí district, and specifically of its associative context in the period 2011-2019, allows for identifying four types of youth groups based on their interests and ages: informal groups, associations with community projects, protest platforms and association coordinators. These typologies are distinguished by the age margins of the young people and by their type of interests, whether those are predominantly "finalist" or "instrumental". Our results are crucial to the understanding of youth associationism and its relationship with public institutions.
