Identification with football clubs in Spain. A sociological analysis of its evolution from 1984 to 2014

Abstract

For many years, the social sciences have highlighted the potential of football —and more specifically, of its main clubs and national teams— in creating spaces of collective identification, as well as their capacity to influence the population’s interaction patterns and promote a broad repertoire of feelings, emotions, and participation and consumption patterns. The research presented in this article examines identification with football clubs in Spain, and it analyses the evolution of these clubs as enclaves of collective identification across the past three decades, as well as the internal dynamics of these identifications and the transformations in their social base. To reach this objective, three surveys were used that were administered by the Sociological Research Centre (CIS) to representative samples of the Spanish population in 1984, 2007, and 2014.
