Keywords:

This text comments critically on an article in which the results of a compared research about the different causes of the increasing divergence on the development of South European Welfare States are synthesized. The different impact of the economic and financial crisis, as well as the anti-crisis reforms applied in Spain, Italy, Portugal and Greece are analysed. In the first section, the reasons of the historic divergence among Southern European Welfare States are assessed. Next, it is analysed how the Great Recession opens a gap between Spain and Italy on the one hand, and Portugal and Greece on the other, as to coverage and protective intensity, as well as to effectiveness of social reforms. Finally, the article reflects on how the Mediterranean welfare regimes will run in the future within a fractured Social Europe.Downloads
