Abstract

The high-mountain basins of the Sierra Nevada are characterized by the presence of a dense, abandoned forest stand, primarily pine, that developed in the middle of the last century. The objective of this study was to analyze the impact of forest density reduction through thinning in the Bernal River watershed, located on the northern slope of the Sierra Nevada in Jérez del Marquesado (Granada). To this end, a distributed rainfall-runoff model was constructed using the TETIS code. This model allowed us to: 1) simulate river flow and determine the surface, hypodermic, and groundwater components; 2) quantify the increase in recharge under different forest thinning intensities; and 3) obtain calibration parameters that can be used to estimate resources in reforested watersheds in the Sierra Nevada. The results, in the analyzed watershed, demonstrated an increase in recharge of nearly 40% for a forest management system with 50% of the current pine stand.
