La estrategia de Japón en el Indopacífico: ¿seguridad económica o alineamiento geopolítico?

Este artículo examina el desarrollo de la estrategia japonesa conocida como «Indopacífico libre y abierto» (FOIP, por sus siglas en inglés), situándola dentro del contexto de la competencia entre grandes potencias, específicamente entre Estados Unidos y China. Para ello, destaca las limitaciones de la teoría de la gaiatsu (presión externa) y argumenta que debe interpretarse como una estrategia basada en intereses económicos pragmáticos. Así lo demuestran el liderazgo de Tokio en la supervivencia del Tratado Integral y Progresista de Asociación Transpacífico (CPTPP), su adhesión a la Asociación Económica Integral Regional (RCEP) y la creciente importancia del Sur Global en la política exterior de Japón desde la segunda Administración de Shinzo Abe (2012-2020). La FOIP de Japón muestra la autonomía y la decisión del país nipón de priorizar su agenda económica y estratégica, sin alinearse con Estados Unidos ni ceder a presiones de China.
