Abstract: This article identifies the author’s variants among the different readings in the testimonies of Nobiliario vero and demonstrates that there were at least three redactional stages. It also determines the guidelines that Mexía followed in his writing process from 1478 (date of the first version) to 1485 (when the final version was finished). Mexía added several passages to his text ‒sometimes in order to contradict certains opinions of the first version‒, he also replaced some terms and expressions, and suppressed certain passages; he did all this due to stylistic and ideological reasons. This study reveals that he pursued not only a clearer exposition of thoughts but also to enhance the persuasive aspects of his argumentation; that’s why he added to his text more quotations by authorities and limited the traces of his vehemence in defending his ideas.
Keywords: Hernán Mexía, Nobiliario vero, 15th century literature, author’s variants, redactional stages.
