«Maria Balteira and dice (Pero Garcia Burgalês, 125,19)»
Abstract: The present essay analyses a satirical cantiga by Pero Garcia Burgalês directed against the famous soldadeira Maria Pérez Balteira. According to the common interpretation of the text, the poet reprimands Maria for being accustomed to playing dice and cursing, and warns her against what could happen if she ever were to sleep with a honourable man (bon ome): she could curse in her sleep, which would cause her great shame. The author suggests an alternative interpretation based on equivocatio: in a well-recorded Occitan tradition playing dice means, in fact, having a sexual intercourse, as well as an erotic allusion can be detected in the expression bon ome. This interpretation allows a correction to be made on v. 18, in order to make the text plainer.
Keywords: Galician-Portuguese lyric, satire, Balteira, dice, equivocation.
