Abstract

Bringing New Life to Flat Roofs is a project implemented by the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC), the University of Barcelona (UB), and OasiUrbà (2021-2023). Its main objective is improving the quality of life during the ageing process for Ciutat Vella’s communities of residents in Barcelona. Through a co-design and prototyping of low-cost, sustainable, easy-to-dismantle solutions, the project turns flat rooftops into spaces for care, and social life. Its main outcome is enhancing communal flat roofs’ value as key social infrastructures in the city’s advancement towards urban ecology. It has created spaces of pacification and socialization, contributing to improving the citizens’ quality of life in high population density environments with intense touristification’s dynamics.
