Urban appropriation as the articulation of the physical and the social: the management of Campo de Cebada

Urban appropriation places at the forefront the notion of public space as a product sensitive to social and citizen practices. The article presents some of the results obtained in research conducted between 2019 and 2021, focused on understanding appropriation as an urban process and phenomenon. It addressed, through historical reconstruction, a representative case study: the shared management of Campo de Cebada, in the city of Madrid. It is of interest to expose the lessons learned from a reference experience of the temporary transformation of a disused lot through social action, considering the elements that, on one hand, generated permanence, transcendence, and notoriety, and on the other hand, conditioned its temporality, instability, and abrupt ending.
