Abstract

Halbwachs’s work on Social Morphology is here considered as one of the earliest yet most significant sociological
contributions to the town planning debate at the turn of XX century. This notwithstanding, its scientific
findings have been hitherto little known in world of the urban sciences. The article proposes a fresh rereading
of Halbwachs’s opinions as to the social production of urban space, and links his thesis here with
the origins of scientific urban planning.
