La Ciudad Lineal: The birth of a magazine

Abstract

The paper recounts that the magazine, La Ciudad Lineal first came out during the second half of May, 1897 and from its eraliest numbers onwards centred its attention on matters proper to that new field of studies that was then city and territorial planning or urbanismo, in this, antedating by seven years Der Städtebau which first saw the light in Berlin and Vienna in January, 1904. The paper examines the contents of the Spanish magazine during these first seven years to the end of establishing it as the first magazine in the world to be fully dedicated to its subject matter. The author underlines the importance that the specialized magazine press held then as the principal channel by which new thinking was spread.
