Abstract

In the early twenty-first century almost 66% of the region’s population lives in
municipalities considered urban, occupying only 12% of the whole area of Galicia. On that territorial
and human basis, a descriptive methodology analyzes the polycentric structure that the Galician
urban system presents, deepening into the existing main types of settlements and in the territorial
changes experienced over the last few years at regional level, taking the study of Planning
Guidelines adopted by the Galician Government in early 2011, as a new benchmark. Having identified
the different urban realities, an assessment is made of the Vigo Metropolitan Area, recently formed,
and addresses the advisability of the merging of municipalities.
