Urban Metabolism, Energy and Mobility: The Challenges of Urban Planning in the Decline of the Oil Era
Keywords:
Metabolismo urbano, energía, movilidad, petróleoAbstract
The article proposes several measures to address, from a mobility perspective, the end of the
relatively cheap and abundant energy. Considerations about oil crash consequences have to be
done not only regarding goods and passenger transport, but also regarding other “invisible” needs
as water, electricity and gas transport; as well as other indirect energy demands, such as those
arising from vehicle manufacture and infrastructures construction. From a life cycle perspective of
those goods and services provided by our cities, it is clearly needed to move towards an urbanism
that enhances proximity between different activities in order to reduce motorized transportation
and strengthen the production and local supply of energy and water. This article concludes with a
refl ection on the obstacles and the benefi ts that entails addressing the proposed measures.
