Abstract

Certain geographers for some time now have used the image of an archipelago to ward of the
tendency to qualify metropolitan forms in a uniform way. Post 70s Metropolitan mapping has
however kept to the more usual norm with its notion of the metropolitan fact as coming fi rst and
foremost thus ignoring much of that wealth and variety that hitherto had been expressed,
subordinating these to the vastness of the great metropolitan stain. Infrastructures are now seen to
be what most requires expressing. The author feels that it is high time to see the great city in new
ways that would include making structures less important than things.
