Abstract

The paper proposes a methodology for the territorial analysis of agriculture from a geographical
perspective. This perspective puts territory at the centre of any such analysis and sets out to
incorporate territorial and sectorial criteria within the design of public policy. The basis of the
methodology here offered is the concept of agricultural “multi-functionality”, which is analyzed
from a territorial perspective. This analysis goes into greater depth when considering the
relationship between agriculture and territory focusing, in doing so, on the main features of different
location-related types of agriculture and the spatial dynamics of agricultural functions. Finally, the
paper suggests a series of key notions as to the inclusion of territorial criteria as within agricultural
policy and for the moment when it comes to deciding the role that each type of agriculture is to be
called to play as within spatial planning.
