The Exclusive Estates of Buenos Aires
Keywords:
Urbanizaciones privatizadas, area metropolitana de Buenos Aires, urbanizaciones "encerradas’", ciudades cerradas, mercado inmobiliario, segregacion social, Buenos Aires (Argentina).Abstract
The paper purposes an explanation of the measure in which the building of a great mass of 'exclusive or, better,
excluding' housing has altered the complexion of the metropolis, such ventures being a major source of both
urban segregation and exclusiveness and novel life styles that could go quite some way in explaining the
bearing these have upon National Policy, the Business set up and the where their funding comes from. The
paper is a digest of much research output, cullings from books, press material and specialized guide works.
Its principal conclusions lay bear the sheer extent of the phenomenon with its country clubs, walled
neighbourhoods, private townships and chacras, the extent to which such residences are used as the fixed
address or simply as get-away bolt holes by their owners, the life style they call into being especially as to
security risks, the territorial shifting that they have brought on and the impact they cannot but have on the
on-going present day Argentine Crisis.
