Five decades of urban planning and transformations in the Region of Murcia, 1975-2025

This paper analyses the different phases of urban planning and urban transformations in the last fifty years in the Region of Murcia. The first period, 1975-2000, corresponds to the phase of adaptation to the democratic urban planning model. The second period, 2000-2025, includes both the phase of the real estate bubble and the subsequent crisis. For each of these periods, the main characteristics of the general plans are presented, as well as the dynamics and forms of: peripheral areas, coastal tourism environments, and economic activity zones. In addition, specific aspects of each period are also reviewed, such as the planning of historical areas at the end of the last century or the recent experiences of regional planning. This analysis contextualizes the current urban situation and concludes with a discussion on future challenges.
