Abstract

Open space is now recognized as a key urban subsystem that plays an
essential role in the spatial configuration of cities and metropolitan areas, providing
a broad range of social and environmental functions. This paper addresses the treatment
of open space in the context of spatial planning in Spain through the comparative
analysis of twelve metropolitan-scale plans. The study focuses both on the concept
and on the importance given to open space by metropolitan plans, as well as on
its composition, spatial articulation and functionality. The results point to a general

trend towards giving more weight to the environmental dimension of open spaces,
recognizing their multifunctional nature and strengthening the physical and functional
interconnection between their constituent elements. On the other hand, the analysis
reveals the current lack of consensus on the definition of open space. Two main
approaches to this concept can be identified: one focused on the recreational and
public use dimension of urban and periurban open spaces, and the other centered on
their environmental and productive functions.
