Abstract

INTRODUCTION. The study of the situation of High School female teachers during the Franco regime is the purpose of this study, with particular attention to the repressive action exerted on them by the depuration process. METHOD. We have consulted the legislation, statistics and bibliography about High School female teachers during the Francoist regime. RESULTS. The gradual incorporation of women into High School teacher staff during the first third of the XXth century coincided with the Francoist regime, which meant an obstacle to the mentioned incorporation and to the intellectual vanguard, which was occurring, and a regression against the emerging Republican policies for the incorporation of women into society as a member with full rights . It has to wait for late sixties, and especially for the General Law on Education of 1970 to start with the "feminization" of high school teachers, as it has been called. The access of women to the public High School teacher staff is more gradual during the decades of the forties and fifties, and increases, however, very broadly in the sixties, coinciding, in fact, with the generalization of this type of education, which originates the creation of new High Schools, affiliated sections, etc. demanding greater number of teachers an, opportunity of which women will take advantage. DISCUSSION. We assume that university studies served women in such an important way that they facilitated not only their incorporation as teachers, at the end of the dictatorship, but they also meant a ship of the role played by women in a modern and democratic society a shift of the role played by women in a modern and democratic society.
