Abstract

The high prevalence of oral pathology encourages knowing its manifestations and their urgent nature, the objective of this study.

This retrospective observational study analyzed the oral pathology of patients aged <14 years who attended at the Emergency Department at a secondary-level hospital. The variables collected in an ad hoc protocol were treated statistically using Pearson's chi-square test.

55 patients were included, mean age 4.11±3.61. The distribution of pathologies was as follows: mucosal pathology (n=35; 61.63%), dental pathology (n=12; 21.81%), and traumatic pathology (8; 14.54%). Mucosal infections were associated with age ≤6 years (p=0.001) and fever (p=0.001). Dental pathology was associated with: >6 years (p<0.001), pathochrony >24 hours (p=0.028), immunocompromised (p=0.036) and, with previous prescription of antibiotics (p=0.004) and NSAIDs (p=0.002).

These findings should be corroborated with a larger sample size in order to develop protocols for action.
