Just a way station to the city? Rootedness and immigrants’ trajectories of progress in rural areas

In rural areas, economic development and social sustainability depend largely on the arrival and subsequent settlement of the foreign population. The paper explores the capacity of rural localities to bring vital, familiar and economic opportunities to the immigrant population. The analysis was carried out using the last population census data. Regional origin and gender were the main independent variables. The results highlight, on the one hand, that rural permanence is closely associated with the opportunities to improve labour conditions and to develop family ties. On the other hand, to those who exit from rural areas to urban ones, the conditions the city offers do not contribute in a significant way to labour and family stability. And finally, for immigrant women, the rural milieu is unfavourable, like the local population.
