Transnationalism revisited: Contributions and limits of an intermediate-range theory for the study of migration
Keywords:
Migration, transnationalism, intermediate-range theoriesAbstract
In recent decades, the transnational perspective has become the framework of analysis for many studies in the field of migration. Its recognition as an innovative approach has been a breakthrough on the corset generated by methodological nationalism. However, transnationalism faces also doubts, criticism and challenges such as the construction of analytical tools that address multi-localized research. Based on this interest, the article examines and discusses how transnationalism has been understood in the international literature of the past years. In this regard, we highlight the main methodological contributions and redefine ultimately the transnational perspective as an intermediate-range theory which allows us to empirically investigate the migratory phenomenon, but within the limits set by the absence of a global theory of migration.Downloads
