A stratigraphic review on the Upper Ordovician beds at the Southern flank of the Cañaveral Syncline (Monfragüe National Park) led to formally defining two new units: Puente del Cardenal and Villarreal de San Carlos Formations. The limit between the two newly presented Formations was placed in a highly bioturbated thin bed, rich in iron oxides, which is interpreted as a condensed series deposited at higher sea level times. The first one divided in two members separated by a transgressive surface; we have named them Lower Member and Upper Member. Villarreal de San Carlos Formation is divided itself in two members named Organized Member and Disorganized Member separated by a scar. The latter consisting in mass-transported deposits due to the Hirnantian glaciation regression.
