La imaginación cosmopolita

Este artículo aborda la importancia del cosmopolitismo como fuerza mundial en relación con la europeización y con el contexto más amplio de la globalización. Se examinan las implicaciones que tiene para Europa el proceso de transformación social global y de qué manera requiere un proyecto político cosmopolita. El cosmopolitismo puede considerarse como una alternativa tanto al nacionalismo como a la globalización, pero para ello debe ser un cosmopolitismo crítico, capaz de interrogar y someter a prueba de manera empírica las hipótesis del cosmopolitismo. El cosmopolitismo hoy, a diferencia de lo que sucedía en el pasado, es post-universal y conlleva el reconocimiento de la existencia de una multiplicidad de proyectos cosmopolitas en el mundo. No es un proyecto exclusivamente occidental, sino que puede darse en cualquier lugar y en cualquier momento. Una definición general operativa del cosmopolitismo debe articularse como un enfoque de las ciencias sociales interesado por los procesos identificadores de autotransformación que surgen del encuentro con los otros en el contexto de unas preocupaciones globales.
