The control of external borders is undoubtedly an issue of the greatest contemporary relevance. It presents a range of challenges on various fronts in a setting in which, in an increasingly globalised world, the movement of populations is an unstoppable process. For reception countries, it is crucial to achieve intelligent, effective and organised management of external borders without neglecting human rights. This edition of Revista CIDOB d’Afers Internacionals reflects on the control of foreign borders from a perspective that seeks to give greater visibility to the need for human rights to be respected in the face of approaches whose priority is essentially security. To this end, five of the studies in this edition focus on the European situation, while three analyse alternative experiences and models of action that serve to enrich the debate and provide a wider perspective on the issue.
