Sector farmacéutico, patentes y acceso a medicamentos en el Sur

Este artículo aborda la falta de acceso a tratamientos farmacológicos por parte de las personas pobres del Sur económico. Para ello estudia, en primer lugar, la extraordinariamente rentable industria farmacéutica, cuya investigación olvida las enfermedades típicas del Sur, dada su gran concentración empresarial y de mercado en los países del Norte, donde el marketing resulta decisivo. Luego aborda la relación entre los altos precios de los medicamentos y un sistema de patentes muy reforzado por lasreglas de la OMC, y que entra en colisión con el derecho a la salud, como ha puesto de manifiesto el caso del tratamiento contra el VIH/Sida en los países del Sur. El trabajo concluye subrayando la necesidad de una intervención activa del sector público, tanto a nivel estatal como internacional, que limite las patentes sobre fármacos e impulse la investigación sobre las enfermedades olvidadas.
