Why has immigration become such a central issue of political debate? What is the nature of the politicisation of immigration? To answer these questions, some academic studies have tended to focus on the parties (and actors) on the far right. That, however, implies analysing no more than the process, without getting to grips with the underlying causes that enable the mobilisation of the migration issue among the public. Other studies, particularly since the so-called refugee crisis of 2015, have centred on the development of certain anti-immigration narratives (especially in the media) or on more political issues (competition among parties, public opinion or electoral behaviour). The papers comprising this issue of Revista CIDOB d’Afers Internationals seek to add new ingredients and go a step further, by zooming in on different actors (political parties, civil society, media outlets, society in general, etc.) and arenas (public, political and policy) simultaneously.
