Abstract

Using data on the height of enlisted conscripts, this article examines the trend in average height of the generations born in the Valencia Region between 1840 and 1969. This makes it possible to explore the biological standard of living of the region's inhabitants from the mid-19th to the mid-20th century. The results show that in the long term there was an improvement in the height and biological standard of living of this population as a whole. Nevertheless, a detailed analysis reveals that the biological standard of living did not improve linearly over time, but experienced periods of regression: in the third quarter of the 19th century, between the cohorts of 1865 and 1880, in the early years of the modernisation of the region's economy and during the drafts of the period of autarchy under Franco (cohorts from 1918 to 1928
