Abstract

The aim of this paper is to show a source for the study of consumption of goods in Spain: the data from the ‘impuesto de puertas’ (municipal tax) in 1835-1839, that are included in the ‘Diccionario de Madoz’ (Madoz Dictionary), as well as the methodology used to build shopping baskets from these. To this end, an estimate is made of the urban consumption structure of two cities in the South of the Iberian Peninsula, Jaén and Granada. The results seem to be in line with that found in other cities, such as Valladolid and Alcoy, using other sources.
