Abstract

This article studies the dispute between an America immersed in revolutions and a reactionary Europe. It covers the period between 1815 and 1816, marked in Europe by the Congress of Vienna and Napoleon’s return, and in Latin America by the declaration of independence in Rio de la Plata, which was the only province that had remained free from any royal reconquest. Through the contemporary press, it studies how the patriots from Plata saw and judged the events in Europe, which they interpreted as a reactionary step backwards. This view formed part of a more general interpretation of history, in which America was trying to find its place and affirm its own identity. It shows how their observations of Europe were articulated around the search for a political solution for the new state. entailed diplomatic negotiations and projects regarding the kind of regime that the province should adopt to be accepted within the «concert of nations » and achieve peace with Spain.
