The plans of Zaragoza by Dionisio Casañal (1880-1911): their use in municipal planning and management

The plans of Zaragoza composed by Dionisio Casañal, between 1878 and 1911, have been
widely used to access the knowledge of city’s urban past. However, until now, the process of the
formation of the documents, nor the use given to them in the past or even now a days in the current
planning and management of the city-the objectives for which they were made- have not been
analysed. This is the purpose of this contribution. To achieve this, a bibliography of the urbanistic
evolution of Zaragoza, original documentation on the drafting of the plans, their characteristics and
the results obtained together with documentation of the Municipal Urbanism Department have
been consulted. The examination verified that some of these plans were used profusely by the
municipal technical services for several decades and that some of them continue to be used
currently when more than 100 years have elapsed since their execution.
