Abstract

The strong development of renewable energies in Europe has to be understood within a broad frame
which includes energy policies, high social acceptance, and the interest of large companies, which
translate such acceptance and political support in substantial dividends. However, this
implementation is not without contradictions and confl icts, as opposed to conventional energy
systems using scattered renewable resources. This leads to higher territorial confl icts and the need
to enhance the landscape dimension on the energy policy decisions. The core of the article refl ects
the public concern about the transformations that renewable energies implementation are driving
in landscape. On the one hand, the paper focuses on the international scientifi c debate on the value
of the public opinion in decision making process in locating clean energy plants. On the other hand,
the paper explores the technological capability to combine the installation of such plants with
attention to landscape values. The fi nal conclusion refl ects on the relationship between energy and
landscape, to attach greater importance to the environmental debate and landscape protection in
the process of the energy policy implementation; and fi nally, to integrate energy policies within the
framework of a strategic spatial planning of facilities.
