Abstract

Urban vegetation is very beneficial to the quality of city life. The paper studies the urban woodlands distribution
in Fuenlabrada (Madrid Autonomous Regional Community) and the contribution this makes to environmental
sustainability by its improving of the quality of the air. Research, based on the interpreting of aerial
photography to establish land use patterns, green spaces and urban woodlands distribution was here
undertaken. On the grounds of this, a North American computer model (UFORE Model) was applied to the
results to determine the effects on air pollution evacuation of urban woodlands.. The principal aim was the
pinpointing of such management strategies as would maximize the benefits thus identified. The results of
the study along with its recommendations are to be offered to Fuenlabrada´s Environmental Department
to help in the developing of tools that could serve as guidelines for local government initiatives purposing
sustainable development goals, especially in the air quality field.
