This paper focuses on the study of lighthouses as public works and public properties, with their limitations and easements, including the land used in servicing such installations. Some references are also made to maritime signals because of their close linkage with lighthouses. The paper explains the legislative evolution since the mid-19th century, with the fluctuations in their linkage to the coasts and ports, until its final adscription to national ports since 1992. Most lighthouses are located outside the port service area, raising the problem of their delimitation. In recent years, the tendency to admit complementary uses has been consolidated, in particular the hotelier and restaurants. The article concludes with a note on the easements of lighthouses, the current regulation of which is clearly insufficient.
