Abstract

For the authors, the drawing up of a General Plan is a formidable undertaking for any city hall and more so if this purposes an overall computer programme to cover all its geographic referents. The computer approach here described has been marked by a constant duality as it had to answer to the need for a programme in itself that would also tie in with the General Plan as such and all this against the clock to further raise the stakes. To meet these demands, a combined approach, here called CAD-GIS, has been chosen for its flexibility and functionalism, this so that the means offered by both technologies couldmthen be adapted to the matter in hand. The paper describes the authors ' experiences in this undertaking, one in which the major challenge has been the drawing up of a cartographic database and its integration in a data model that conforms to corporative needs.
