Abstract

The paper speaks of the many calls for a planned growth in San Sebastian during the middle years of the 19C. and of how, once the city walls had been demolished, a public competition was held for a city extension project which was won by the architect Antonio de Cortazar. Compared to the other entries, his plan is here seen as standing out for its pragmatism and capacity to meet the city's requirements along with its capacity to fit in with the site available. Its use of criteria and methods of management and ordering are said to hark back to Cerda as well as answer the guidelines transmitted by the Ministry in Madrid.
