Abstract

Sustainable urban mobility is one of the main challenges that modern cities are facing. Urban mobility plans should be aimed at creating an adequate environment that guarantees a high quality of life for citizens and promoting the economic development of the city. This paper analyzes the mobility in Barcelona in order to determine to what extent the city can be considered smart in terms of sustainable mobility. The challenges presented by the current model have been determined and the strategies carried out by the city to achieve the objectives of sustainable mobility examined. The study is based in reports and statistical data published by public administrations and prestigious organizations in this field, as well as recent theoretical contributions. Although Barcelona is one of the cities in the world that scores better in the smart city indexes and has a high quality public transport network, the main conclusion shows that it still presents a serious problem for sustainable mobility: the large number of private motor vehicles occupying its streets.
