Abstract

Tourism implementation in the Canary Islands dates back to the late nineteenth century
and throughout its history it has encompassed various stages. A number of authors have approached
and made significant contributions to its study, dividing the process of building the Canary Islands’
tourism phase into several different stages. This paper analyses the territorial-planning strategies
and policies developed by public actors in relation to creating the Islands’ tourism space. Based on
this analysis, a sequencing is proposed to relate these urban policies established by public actors
to the effective process of building the tourism space for the Canary Islands.
