Abstract

The paper approaches the relation between built environment and mobility through
the analysis of proximity dynamics in the city of Barcelona. Analysing the distribution of the
travel times inside the city, the Micro travels (travels less than 5 minutes) are suggested as a
valid indicator of near city use and neighborhood life. A first approximation to the characteristics
of time and space of the proximity factor is followed by a case study on the city of Barcelona,
in which the different distribution of these dynamics is analyzed on a district scale. This
analysis allows the distinction of some key factors on the existence of proximity, such as rent
or population density.
