Half a Century of City and Territorial Thought: the Figure of Fernando Terán

The paper attempts to portray the intellectual, professional and artistic stature of Fernando Terán.
The underscoring rationale to his life’s work and its grounding in his home environment and authors
amongst these especially Ortega and Bergson is gone into. For the author here, his epistemological
historicism is the driving force behind his contribution to planning from an architect’s professional
stance. Three points of infl exion to his career are underlined and felt to point up the coherence of
his thinking as is the position he held on various major issues such as Territory as project, the city
and Communications, environmental planning, Structure and Flexibility in planning and the role this
latter in Social Reform. The paper is rounded out with a description of his artistic preferences and
visions of the Future
