Abstract

For the authors, the literature to date on sprawl and suburbanization indicates that these factors
generate a decline in political participation, as well as an increase in conservative attitudes as
among residents in metropolitan suburbs. The principal analytical arguments backing such theses
on suburbanization are presented here. Using multi-level analysis, these theses are empirically
analyzed as to their bearing upon metropolitan municipalities in Spain. The results show basic
intra-metropolitan cleavages according to municipal size (this as to electoral turnout) and, likewise,
according to their socio-economic profi le (as to electoral preferences to be therein found). However,
these intra-metropolitan cleavages do not match up with the suburbanization characteristics
uncovered for truly municipal nor metropolitan areas.
