Immigration and socio-residential stratification in the Barcelona Metropolitan Region

Abstract

During the last decade the international migration phenomenon has produced deep changes in the Barcelona
city as well as in its Metropolitan Region. The strong migration fl ow and the different ethnic settlements
and segregation types have created a new kind of urban inequality, being the ethnic factor one of the most
relevant. Because of this, the aim of this paper is the analysis of the relationship between the residential
insertion and segregation of immigration and the metropolitan socio-residential stratifi cation. Besides, the
paper also analyzes the transformation of this stratifi cation, being observed an important trend toward
socio-ethnic stratifi cation, as in other European cities.
