The Basque Family Farmstead as an Essential Unit of Territorial Structuring to any Sustainable Master Plan for the City of San Sebastián

The author sees recent years as having been marked by profound renewal in all things concerned with the
planning of the city and most especially by an ambitious drive towards favouring the protecting and improving
of the urban environment. Under the aegis of this last a reconsideration of the territory surrounding the city
proper has undergone a deep transformation as well, no longer being considered as no more than ground up
for building urban spread upon but rather as part and parcel of the city’s proper sustainability. Many cities
have thus begun to establish green belts that allow for an immediate transition as between their
neighbourhoods and the free space beyond. At present San Sebastián is in the discussion stage of its new
master plan and interesting proposals have been made as to urban environmental quality planning. A call
has been made for the conceptualising of new figures as within the structuring of ground scheduled as not
open to being built upon aimed at the preserving of a rural landscape and the farmsteads proper to this to
the end of thus guaranteeing the upkeep of the quality of life in the urban centre it surroundings.
