Abstract

The paper examines the regional convergence and/or divergence of per capita income in Spain by means of
contrasted methodologies to thus obtain a clearer understanding of regional development as to income over
the last 21 years. After an initial use of Theil’s index of inequality (THEIL,1967) so as to effect a breakdown
of the per capita income in question into its constituent factors and a determining of which part of inequality
is attributable to each of these explanatory factors, the problem of sigma convergence as to the different
levels of per capita rent and productivity is examined and an estimate attempted of the equation of convergence
as proposed by BARRO & al (1991,1992), this to serve in an analysis of the nature of each region’s behaviour
and the process of convergence as a whole.
