Chronic occupational vulnerability: an analysis of the location of basic occupations in the city of Madrid 2001-2021

From the 2008 the 2008 financial crisis to the effects of COVID-19, much scientific research has highlighted the relevance of the global risk thesis and its associated process of instability of the stable ones, according to which vulnerability becomes more heterogeneous and spreads socially and territorially. The aim of this article, therefore, is to contrast this argument, representing by neighborhoods, a location coefficient (LQ) in the city of Madrid, with the rate of workers in elementary occupations (as a model of a vulnerable group from a socioeconomic perspective), using data from the Population and Housing Census for the years 2001, 2011 and 2021. This approach and methodological proposal have served to conclude that Madrid is a fragmented city, where socioeconomic vulnerability has not only not spread throughout the territory during the period studied; it is also asymmetrical, selective, and inseparable from the processes of social-spatial segregation that it generates.
