Abstract
INTRODUCTION. Creativity is one of the most demanded skills in today’s society due to its relevant role in solving problems and adapting to a changing and competitive context. OBJECTIVES. This study aims to find out the correlation between creativity and performance among 3rd and 6th grade students of primary education (8-11 years old, MD:9.81±SD:.48; N=271, 51.7% boys and 48.3% girls) selected intentionally in a Spanish educational center. The aim is to analyze whether there is a relationship between the level of creativity and the performance shown by the participants in the study, also taking into account the variables of sex and age. METHOD. For this purpose, a digital application of the CREA Test (Corbalán et al., 2003) has been used and the grades in the subjects of language and mathematics and the final grade of the subjects of the 2020-2021 school year have been used as academic performance data. RESULTS. Creativity scores decrease in the last cycle of primary education with respect to the 3rd and 4th grades, with a significant positive correlation between creativity and academic performance in all age groups. Both qualifications and test scores were slightly higher in females, although not statistically
significantly higher than in males. DISCUSSION. The various causes for which the creative capacity decreases in children of 10 and 11 years old are discussed, with respect to those of 8 and 9 years old, concluding the need to design programs that develop the creative potential of the students to be competent favoring their comprehensive development.
