Abstract

The biblical origin of death as punishment is the starting point of its exemplarity which, based on theological assumptions, gave it a halo of penitence, which is outlined in all orders of human action and coexistence, in order to achieve forgiveness and return to divine grace. This paper analyses the different motifs that project the exemplarity of death in the wisdom literature: physical death and spiritual death; transcendence and the sentence of the soul; the marvellous event (miracles, premonitions, revelations or visions); fear (and the macabre) linked to the archetype of death and its embodiments in various topics (memento mori, vado mori, contemptus mundi); the good death and the artes moriendi and, finally, posthumous fame and the immortality of knowledge.
