Obesity and food away from home: A sociological approach to the Spanish society

Abstract

Food Studies that link obesity and eating outside home have developed from the finding of increased food away from home in the development process of modern societies. The health consequences of this increase have been analyzed from the field of nutrition to find out the relation with the increase of obesity. However, the results are contradictory. Some authors show that eating out produces obesity, others do not find this causal relationship. In this paper we will offer a sociological approach that clarifies these contradictory results. To this end, it is incorporated into the traditional analysis of consumption frequencies, the analysis of the motivations, the social relationships and the attitudes that sociologically frame for eating out behavior. The data show that food outside home in Spain has particularities that compel a sociological reflection about its relationship with obesity.

Doctora en Sociología y profesora titular de la Universidad de Oviedo. Dirige el Grupo de Investigación en Sociología de la Alimentación (http://www.unioviedo/socialimen). Entre sus trabajos destacan “Eating out in Spain: motivations, sociability and consumer contexts” en Appetite (Díaz-Méndez and García-Espejo, 2017); “The sociology of food in Spain: European Influences in Social Analyses on Eating Habits” (2006), “Nutrition and the Mediterranean diet. A historical and sociological analysis of the concept of ‘health diet’ in Spanish society”, (Díaz-Méndez y Gómez Benito, 2010). Ha coordinado diversos libros y monográficos con otros autores: Alimentación, Consumo y Salud, (Fundación La Caixa, 2008), Alimentación fuera del hogar (ICARIA, 2017); 2005); Los hábitos alimentarios de los españoles (Ministerio de Agricultura, Alimentación y Medio Ambiente, 2013), Eating out in Europe (Appetite, 2017).
