A Journey of the Amphitruo along Ferrara, Venice and Madrid: A Copy of the Translation of P. Collenuccio at the National Library of Madrid

Abstract

I intend to analyze the translated version of Amphitruo written by the humanist Pandolfo Collenuccio in 1487 in the context of the Plautus festivals of Ercole I d’Este, which editor D’Aristotile Zoppino published in 1530. The translation, the edition and the fact that there is a copy of the latter in the National Library in Madrid not only offer multiple opportunities for reflecting upon the problems that the authors of the theatrical volgarizzamenti in 15th Century Ferrara had to face, together with the (re) construction of the theatrical art in that context, but also lead to reflection about the dissemination that the Italian humanist’s version had among the Spanish translators of the play.
